There are two major story arcs, one of them being the infamous battle between Calvin and Rosalyn where Calvin threatens to flush all of Rosalyn's notes on her exam down the toilet. Rosalyn finally gets her hands on Calvin. Rosalyn demands a raise and advance next time Calvin's parents hire Rosalyn.

The other main story arc is where Calvin and his parents make their way to a wedding, only to realise that Calvin left his ol' pal Hobbes at home. They come back from the wedding to see that ,while they were away, their house was broken into. Calvin was beside himself about the safety of Hobbes, and if he was stolen during the break-in. Hobbes was finally found under the duvet of Calvin's bed, and for the next few strips (right up to the penultimate one of this story arc), Calvin and Hobbes fade completely into the background as the two shocked parents reflect upon the day's emotional events. Although the only thing that was stolen was the television and some of Calvin's Mom's jewelry, this story arc remains as one of the most emotional ones, and shows the ability of the comic to explore feelings felt during such a dire incident.
