The Calvin and Hobbes Wiki

The Telephone is one of many recurring elements in Calvin and Hobbes strips. The telephone in Calvin's house is a small rotary phone, although the first use of a telephone in any strip was a payphone outside of Calvin's house. Usually, Calvin picks up the telephone after it rings, and the voice on the other end is (presumably) one of his parents' friends. In one strip, Calvin walks past the telephone, unplugging it from the wall, and then says "I hate taking messages." The telephone was last seen on November 21, 1995, when Calvin calls his mother from a payphone at school.
