Back cover depicting Calvin and Hobbes in Calvin's time machine.

It was released in October 1991 by Andrews & McMeel and collects the strips published September 11 to October 15, 1989, and October 19 to June 10, 1990, and June 17, 24-30, July 2-7 and July 15, 1990. The included Sunday strips were reprinted in color in The Indispensable Calvin and Hobbes and The Complete Calvin and Hobbes.

The title of the book comes from a comic out of the included Duplicator story arc, in which Hobbes is surprised to find that a machine geared for scientific progress would make a "boink" sound while operating.

The Sunday strip on page 48 (December 24, 1989) was redrawn to fit the format of The Complete Calvin and Hobbes hardcover (book 2, p. 218).  It appears (in color) in its original form also on page 176 of The Indispensable Calvin and Hobbes.

It seems that the art on the title page and page 128 are NOT included in The Complete Calvin and Hobbes hardcover.
