The Moral Compromise Spectral Release Phantasmatron is an unintended component in the Ethicator add-on to the Duplicator. If a duplicate who has been made good via the Ethicator thinks a bad thought, the moral compromise spectral release phantasmatron causes said duplicate to vaporize, as the duplicate would be of the original's good side. As it is impossible for one's good side to be evil, the moral compromise spectral release phantasmatron prevents catastrophe by making the duplicate vanish. It most likely works he other way as well. In other words, for Calvin's "Good" duplicate to exist, it must be perfectly good as an abstraction, performing only good actions and thinking only good thoughts. This only occurred once, when Calvin's good side was about to throttle him but since that was an evil thought, he vanished. Hobbes later told Calvin that he was the only person Hobbes knew whose good side was prone to badness.

The intent of the Phantasmotron is to prevent the ethically-preset (good or bad) duplicate from defeating its purpose. In order to do so, it makes the duplicate instantly vanish into thin air should it think or act against its purpose. The Phantasmotron was only seen acting upon a "good" duplicate when it had an evil thought, but can presumably make an "evil" duplicate vanish should it have a good thought or perform a good deed.

C&H Calvin's Good Side Turns Bad

The Moral Compromise Spectral Release Phantasmatron at work.

The Moral Compromise Spectral Release Phantasmatron is an unintended component in the Ethicator add-on to the Duplicator.
