Calvin and Hobbes (ISBN 0836220889) is the first Calvin and hobbes printed collection. The book was released in April 1987 by Andrews & McMeel and collects the strips published from November 18, 1985 to August 17, 1986, with the exception of the original strip for November 28, 1985. The included Sunday strips were reprinted in color in The Essential Calvin and Hobbes and The Complete Calvin and Hobbes.

Some of the non-strip art in this collection is NOT included in The Complete Calvin and Hobbes hardcover, especially the filler vignettes at the bottom of several pages.

While this is the only book that is not named after a quote from a strip, the book's cover is based on the Sunday strip from April 27, 1986, in which Calvin attempts to fly using Hobbes, his wagon, his roller skates and an umbrella.

Calvin and Hobbes includes a foreword by Gary Trudeau, creator of Doonesbury.
