[[Calvin]] has a wide variety of '''monsters''' living under his bed. They vary in appearance, but they nearly all have tentacles. The monsters have tried to eat Calvin on many occasions, but have never succeeded in getting him off the bed. Perhaps the most well known of the monsters under Calvin's bed are the monsters Maurice and Winslow. Winslow is a annoying talker. Maurice, it seems, is something of a bumbler. In one strip, the monsters had Calvin convinced that there was a "shiny new toy" waiting for him under the bed if he'd just come and get it and that there were no monsters waiting to devour him. The monsters' cover was blown when Maurice cried out for the others to stop bumping into him. It is apparent that the monsters are not there all the time, as in several strips Calvin and Hobbes hide beneath the bed. Light is lethal to the monsters.
